Director of Strategy

We are looking to expand our team with an experienced, smart and creative Director of Strategy that is looking for a new opportunity to bring their unique voice to our team.

Reporting to the General Manager and Partners, this is a leadership role in which you will be responsible for leading and managing strategic marketing initiatives and driving new business for some of our largest clients, as well as leading the agency’s team of account managers and coordinators. 

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 7 years of experience developing strategies and managing integrated marketing communications and branding initiatives for B2B and B2C clients. They are an effective leader who has the natural ability to build relationships at senior management and c-suite levels.



  • Develop and lead marketing and communications strategies for a number of agency clients
  • Lead/develop client and campaign strategies and lead/co-share the execution of the plan
  • In partnership with the General Manager and Creative Director, drive excellence across the agency in our client deliverables, from strategy through to creative product and execution
  • Lead, manage and mentor account management direct reports
  • Lead business development efforts, including mining opportunities, preparation of RFP responses, pitches, and new business meetings with prospective clients
  • Prepare and/or oversee project scope, timelines, briefs, and quote documents
  • Lead internal team briefings
  • Produce and manage budgets, revenue forecasts, and profitability targets
  • Ensure and maintain a high level of client satisfaction and ROI of the clients’ KPIs.
  • Source and maintain relationships with external partners and vendors
  • Attend and represent Blackiron at industry and client-related events and functions


  • Minimum 7 years of related experience, ideally within an agency, leading and managing multiple clients in Marketing, Communications, and Brand strategy, campaign preparation, execution, and analysis
  • Demonstrate a bigger picture understanding of a client’s marketing strategy and communicate how current insights/tactics associate with longer-term strategy objectives
  • An ability to anticipate client needs and identify potential problems is a definite asset
  • Proven ability to lead and foster client relationships at the C-suite
  • Demonstrated experience in pitching and closing new business
  • Experience in leading Website development strategy or management is an asset
  • Well-versed in all forms of media including traditional, digital, email marketing
  • Experience with media planning and implementation
  • Strong understanding of the creative and production processes 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Proven experience in managing teams of people
  • College/University degree in marketing, advertising, or communications
  • Bilingual (French/English) is an asset
  • Experience in SEO, SEM and Social Media campaigns is an asset
  • Experience in developing and leading sponsorship partnerships is an asset
  • Experience in the Tourism, Casino/Gaming, Real Estate, and Sports/Entertainment industries is an asset
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Google Drive suite) Mac
  • Valid Driver’s License & Vehicle is required
  • The candidate must live within the Ottawa area or be willing to relocate quickly.

ANNUAL SALARY: Commensurate with experience.
This is an in-person position and therefore the candidate must be based in the Ottawa area or be willing to relocate quickly.
